Scientists unsure how alcohol helps protect heart? Until now!
he study declared: “In realistic settings, alcoholic beverage consumption lowers postprandial glycemia by 16–37%, which represents an unrecognized mechanism by which alcohol may reduce the risk of chronic disease.”
Postprandial (post-meal) glycemia is the concentration of glucose in human blood after eating a meal.

Bulldozers razed ancient Irish site near Tara
An ancient burial ground near the Hill of Tara (Ireland) - said to be more impressive than the national monument discovered in recent months - has been destroyed. Bulldozers razed the Baronstown site to allow construction work on the controversial M3 motorway in Co Meath continue. Protesters claimed that the site, a Bronze Age settlement described as a ‘multi-period archaeological complex’ by archaeologist Joe Fenwick, was destroyed overnight after machinery moved in. They claim earth movers stripped the site at about 4am on Wednesday 4th July. When protesters arrived at 6am the entire site had been completely razed to the ground.
Stone Pages Archaeo News — That highway must be pretty special.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has decided to abandon net neutrality and allow telecoms companies to charge websites for access.
The FTC said in a report that, despite popular support for net neutrality, it was minded to let the market sort out the issue.
This means that the organisation will not stand in the way of companies using differential pricing to make sure that some websites can be viewed more quickly than others. The report also counsels against net neutrality legislation.
Crooks and Liars — I think the internet is just too complicated for the FTC.
When you’re writing HTML, over time, your CSS files begin to fill up a lot. If you’re working on a large project, you might even end up with several people contributing to the CSS file, not to mention refactoring each other’s work. The result is a directory full of HTML files, and a very large CSS file.
What tends to happen is that not ever selector in the CSS file actually applies to your HTML; many are rendered redundant by refactoring, or by changes in HTML. But when you’ve got a 70k CSS file, it’s not easy to check precisely which selectors aren’t in use any more.
Infovore — This is a good idea, I’ll be checking it out.

Blog Archive Tune Your Guitar (Almost) Silently
Back when I was playing in dive bars, the 14-year-old opening act would always start their set by playing, all together and on stage, the tuning song: E, E, E, E, A, A, A, A, D, D, D… you get the idea. By the time they become closers, they discover plug-in tuners. Now Planet Waves offers an even smaller and easier (on the ears) method of tuning up: the pick-sized sound-on-string tuner.
Just dial in one of the six standard-tuning guitar notes on the back of the tiny device, strum the guitar, then shine the light from its strobing LEDs directly on the vibrating string. Adjust string tension until the lights stop “moving” and you’re ready to play.

Wikis share common design principles, each wiki engine having its own strengths and weaknesses. There are wiki engines best for big communities or for corporate usage depending on the IT infrastructure. Other wiki engines are simple to install for personal usage. Users have different roles and might use many wiki engines. Because wiki engines have different markup languages, it makes them hard to use together.
Creole is a common wiki markup language to be used across different wikis. It’s not replacing existing markup but instead enabling wiki users to transfer content seamlessly across wikis, and for novice users to contribute more easily. Creole will create a community of wikis users and developers that forms a Wiki Ohana. This wiki was initiated and originally set up by the people at the Wiki Markup Standard Workshop at the WikiSym2006.
WikiCreole — Already working with a bunch of wikis. I’d lost track of this project.
Hi, my name is Michel Barbosa and I’m a bachelor student at the Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
My research objective is the delivery of the key adoption factors and demographic characteristics of companies already using Ruby on Rails. This research might function as a starting point for future research on the adoption process of rails.
Michel Barbosa — I am happy to see the results of the survey Michel conducted. I was also one of the respondents to the survey.
The High Cost of Canadian Wireless
Canada is not even close to being competitive with countries around in the world on data prices, which hurts Blackberry sales and reduces the use of mobile services when compared to other countries.
Michael Geist — A package similar but distincly inferior to what ATT offers with the iPhone for $59.99 would cost $295/month in Canada.

I don’t know whether Monty Python ever wrote a gag on programming languages, but if they did, this Erlang video must be it.
programming musings — The video is hilarious, and I’ve wondered if it was serious or a put on. Seems that it was serious. There is a comment in this article from one of the stars.
